Liberal Democrats run
Nuneaton's first carbon neutral election
Mish Whitmore, the Liberal Democrats’ candidate in the Abbey
ward by-election, today committed to run Nuneaton’s
first carbon neutral election campaign. All emissions created during the
campaign, through car use or electricity, will be offset at the end of the
campaign by the planting of trees.
Mish said “many of the parties will talk about how “green”
they are during this campaign, but only the Liberal Democrats are taking real
action to reduce the effect our actions have on our planet.”
Setting out her
proposals for making the Borough more
environmentally friendly, Mish explained why the Council should take the lead.
“The people of Nuneaton are constantly being
told that they need to do more to help our environment but the Council is not
leading from the front.”
If elected, Mish has pledged to fight to:
- switch the Council House to 100% renewable energy, as the
Liberal Democrats have done in their Headquarters
- convert Council vehicles, including the mayoral car, to
the lowest carbon-emitting cars available*
- install energy saving lightbulbs throughout the Council
House.
The Liberal Democrats are leading the way on environmental
issues and have been praised by both Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth for
their policies. Whilst the other major parties are ignoring our environment the Liberal
Democrats, both in Nuneaton and nationally,
are committed to real action to protect our planet.
* Note: greener bio-fuels would be an ideal alternative, but at this time they
are known to cause agricultural pricing problems elsewhere in the
world, especially in developing countries.
